19/12/2017 – Carolina Hurricanes @ Toronto Arenas
No jogo que marcou o centenário do primeiro jogo do Toronto Maple Leafs, que em 1917 eram o Toronto Arenas, na NHL, os visitantes dessa vez foram o Carolina Hurricanes.
A 100 anos atrás, os Arenas perderam para o Montreal Wanderers por 10 a 9, mas não deram chance dos Canes de fazer o mesmo feito em 2017. Os Leafs já foram Arenas entre 1917 e 1919, St. Pats entre 1919 e 1927, antes de Conn Smythe, o então dono da equipe, mudar o nome para Toronto Maple Leafs, homenageando uma divisão do exército canadense do qual ele mesmo fez parte.
A prefeitura de Toronto decretou o dia 19 de dezembro como sendo o Toronto Maple Leafs Day, celebrando toda a história desta equipe que representa a cidade a 100 anos! É uma grande homenagem à uma equipe entre as mais vencedoras na NHL, mas que não tem tido o mesmo sucesso nos últimos 50 anos!
Com o puck no gelo, os Leafs simplesmente se impuseram e aos 02m52s, com os Canes em powerplay, Leo Komarov partiu para cima de Scott Darling, que não conseguiu defender o chute do atacante dos Leafs, que abriu o placar com um gol shorthanded, o primeiro dos Leafs na temporada e o quarto da carreira de Komarov na NHL. Mitch Marner que teve uma noite excelente e acabou anotando 4 pontos no jogo, marcou o segundo dos Leafs aos 05m33s num powerplay. Os Canes até tentaram dificultar, mas paravam em Frederik Andersen. Somente aos 09m07s, Jeff Skinner fez uma ótima jogada e conseguiu vencer Freddie num chute que resvalou em Ron Hainsey. Apesar disso, os Leafs ainda marcaram com James Van Riemsdyk aos 10m34s, em outro powerplay, e Tyler Bozak, aos 13m28s, abrindo 4 a 1 no placar no primeiro período. O gol de JVR foi-nos gol de número 20.000 na história! Mais um marco deste excepcional e comemorativo jogo!
A equipe parecia estar muito mais “ligada” no jogo que ocorreu às 14:00 em Toronto, entretanto o segundo período não viu gols de ambas equipes, mas viu belas defesas tanto de Freddie quanto de Darling.
O terceiro período viu os Leafs voltarem novamente focados e definindo o placar e o jogo. Patrick Marleau marcou aos 09m25s e, apenas seis segundos depois, Kasperi Kapanen marcou outro. William Nylander também acabou com a sua “seca” e marcou aos 14m05s. Para fechar a partida, outro jogador que não marcava a muito tempo, Connor Carrick, marcou aos 18m33s, num powerplay.
Que vitória marcante num jogo comemorativo de 100 anos na NHL! Foram oito gols marcados por oito jogadores diferentes! Bozak e Marner tiveram 4 pontos na partida, 1 gol e 3 assistências cada!
Pena que Auston Matthews ainda está se recuperando de lesão e não pode participar. Quem sabe implicar não seria ainda maior com ele no gelo?!?
Hoje à noite os Leafs já enfrentam o Columbus Blue Jackets, fora de casa! Que essa vibe da vitória de ontem seja mantida!!

15/12/2017 – Toronto Maple Leafs @ Detroit Red Wings
Antes de voltar pra casa, o Toronto Maple Leafs foi ao Little Ceasar’s Arena enfrentar o Detroit Red Wings.
Nunca é fácil enfrentar os Red Wings, nem mesmo quando passam por uma má fase, como agora. Os Red Wings tinham perdido 10 dos últimos 11 jogos e os Leafs começaram melhor. Logo aos 01m58s, Andreas Borgman acertou um chute por entre a defesa dos Wings que deixou Jimmy Howard sem visão. O puck entrou por baixo do braço direito do goleiro. Abrir o placar tão cedo num jogo é sempre uma ótima indicação que a equipe vai manter o volume de jogo e tem ótima chance de vencer a partida, mas não foi isso que aconteceu.
Os Leafs jogaram bem o primeiro período e até que não estavam mal no segundo, mas Danny DeKeyser empatou aos 05m22 numa disputa pelo puck na zona ofensiva dos Wings. Foi o primeiro gol de DeKeyser na temporada. Com o jogo empatado, os Leafs tiveram um powerplay a seu favor, mas acabaram tomando um gol, de Trevor Daley, num contra-ataque em dois contra um, onde Jake Gardiner ficou cobrindo o segundo jogador e deixou Daley sozinho pra chutar em Curtis McElhinney, que não conseguiu defender. O gol shorthanded, com os Red Wings com menos jogadores no gelo que os Leafs (desvantagem numérica) foi o segundo em duas partidas seguidas, o que aconteceu anteriormente em 2007!
Com os Red Wings à frente do placar, os Leafs ainda tinham o terceiro período para se recuperarem, mas Tomas Tatar fechou o placar aos 09m39s, desta vez em vantagem numérica.
Essa foi a terceira derrota seguida dos Leafs, nos três jogos que realizaram fora de casa. A equipe continua sem Auston Matthews e neste jogo contou com Kasperi Kapanen no elenco.
Os Leafs voltam ao gelo na terça-feira, num jogo atípico, às 14:00 no horário de Toronto, 17:00 no Brasil, recebendo a visita do Carolina Hurricanes, no jogo que marcará 100 anos do primeiro jogo do Toronto Arenas na NHL, o time que originou os Leafs. Para este jogo os Leafs utilizarão uma camisa especial, relembrando o uniforme do Toronto Arenas e a data, 19 de dezembro, será oficializada pela prefeitura de Toronto como o “Toronto Maple Leafs Day”. Que honra!!!

01/01/2017 – Detroit Red Wings @ Toronto Maple Leafs – Centennial Classic
Antes de mais nada, quero desejar um ótimo 2017 a todos e, parece que o Toronto Maple Leafs começou o ano com o pé direito! Comemorando o centenário da equipe, os Leafs receberam o Detroit Red Wings no BMO Field, o estádio do Toronto F. C., time de futebol da MLS.
No sábado, último dia do ano, houve o jogo entre ex-jogadores de ambas equipes, contando com nomes como Doug Gilmour, Larry McDonald, Mike Palmeteer, Curtis Joseph, Wendel Clark, Borje Salming, Darcy Tucker, Darryl Sittler, Al Iafrate, Felix Potvin, Dave Andreychuk, Kris Draper, Martin Lapointe, Brendan Shanahan, Chris Osgood, Chris Chelios, Tie Domi, Tomas Kaberle, Dimitri Yushkevich, Gary Roberts, Igor Larionov, Manny Legace, Niklas Lidstrom entre outras estrelas do passado recente da NHL. Neste jogo, que é um amistoso, os Red Wings venceram e houve um fato muito engraçado. Quando os Red Wings posavam para a foto da equipe, Larry McDonald, deslizou no gelo bem em frente deles, tentando “estragar” a foto!! Foi muito engraçado! Mats Sundin estava cotado para participar, mas acabou cancelando pois sua esposa está para dar à luz a seu terceiro filho. No primeiro período, os Leafs cederam um pênalti shot para os Red Wings, mas Mike Palmeteer fez uma excelente defesa, como. Os tempos em que jogava nos Leafs!
Para o jogo oficial, valendo pontos na temporada, o Toronto Maple Leafs, vindo de quatro vitórias seguidas, se sentia tranquilo, exceto pela presença de amigos e familiares neste jogo especial. O jogo começou e ambas equipes buscavam o gol, com os Leafs chutando mais ao gol de Jared Coreau, goleiro dos Red Wings, já que Mrazek e Howard estavam contundidos. O período, apesar de disputado, acabou sem nenhum gol.
Os comentaristas citavam que em jogos ao ar livre, os times visitantes levam a vantagem no histórico de vitórias. O segundo período acabou trazendo esse medo à torcida dos Leafs, quando Anthony Mantha abriu o placar aos 05m32s, quando Henrik Zetterberg fez uma ótima jogada e Mantha chutou sem defesa para Frederik Andersen. O comentário da TV disse que, em jogos ao ar livre, às vezes o goleiro fica sem noção da profundidade pois atras do jogador adversário pode haver uma área muito escura, o que dificulta a visão do puck. Não sei se essa foi a razão, pois era um chute bem defensável, mas ainda não era momento de desespero.
Até o final do segundo período o jogo estava morno, disputado mas sem muita emoção. Tudo isso mudou drasticamente no terceiro período. Os Leafs parecem ter acordado e voltaram dominando o gelo. Aos 01m23s, Leo Komarov empata o jogo para os Leafs, recebendo um passe de Jame Gardiner. A pressão continuou e aos 08m23s, Mitch Marner fez uma linda jogada e marcou o segundo dos Leafs, virando o jogo. Aos 09m34s foi a vez de Connor Brown marcar e aos 12m05s, Auston Matthews marcou. Com 4 a 1 no placar, os Leafs pensaram que a vitória estava garantida, mas os Red Wings passaram a dominar e aos Jonathan Ericsson marcou aos 13m54s, Dylan Larkin aos 18m14s e, faltando apenas 1.1s para terminar o jogo, os Red Wings fizeram o gol de empate com Anthony Mantha. O gol foi revisto para ver se o puck tinha entrado antes de o cronometro zerar e se não houve interferência no goleiro. Após a verificação, o gol foi mantido e o jogo foi pra prorrogação. Os Leafs têm sofrido com a perda de liderança nos últimos jogos. Algo em que Mike Babcock tem que trabalhar a equipe.
A prorrogação foi tão emocionante quanto o terceiro período, com chances para ambas equipe, com os goleiros realizando ótimas defesas, com Morgan Rielly partindo sozinho num contra-ataque e Jared Coreau defendendo, os Red Wings também levaram muito perigo ao gol de Frederik Andersen, mas ao final, Auston Matthews marcou o segundo gol da partida, faltando 01m20s para o final. Auston recuperou o puck, num chute de Jame Gardiner e chutou de backhand para surpreender Coreau e vencer o Centennial Classic! Foi um final dos sonhos para um evento celebrando o centenário de um dos times Original Six! Não posso pensar em uma forma melhor de comemorar!
Agora é manter o ritmo que vamos rumo aos playoffs!!! Ainda tem muito jogo e muito tempo, mas com certeza dá!

My history in the Leaf’s Centennial
Brendan Shanahan announced the start of the Toronto Maple Leafs Centennial Season with an special exhibition at NHL Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. This made me think in writing about how I became part of the Leafs Nation, mainly because I’m not even born in North America or Europe, the biggest markets for ice hockey, I was born in Brazil, a country with no knowledge or culture of hockey.
This is my history and it is also part of the 100 years history of this franchise as it is not only the history of the team located in the center of hockey universe, but a team that developed a Leafs Nation all around the world!
Back in January 2002, just months after the 9/11 terrorist attack took place, I worked for a consulting company in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and as I grew up playing basketball and watching Los Angeles Lakers games, Magic Johnson Era, I was excited to have my first travel to US to a one week training, when I would also go to Philips Arena and watch a Los Angeles Lakers @ Atlanta Hawks. It was just amazing! At that time, it wasn’t possible to buy tickets in internet, so just after one friend and I got to Atlanta on a Saturday, we went directly to Philips Arena and bought tickets for the game of our dreams! It would be played on Tuesday. The game was awesome! Watch players as Shaquile O’neal and Kobe Bryant on the court was great! That was an unbelievable night!
You may be asking why am I writing about basketball, but this fact will take me to the beginning of my love for Hockey.
Unfortunately we had nothing to do on Wednesday night and started to search what was available to do in Atlanta. At the same venue, Philips Arena, there would be an NHL game and all information I had ever had about hockey was that they played on ice, there were fights and it was an sport Canada loves. I didn’t even know the teams or the rules. At the end we bought tickets to Toronto Maple Leafs @ Atlanta Thrashers on January 30th, 2002. At least I was expecting a good game since a team from Toronto should be a good team, based in my sparce hockey knowledge.
We went to Philips Arena and although the seats were far from ice (we bought cheap tickets as we were not hockey fans at that time), but the experience was amazing for me! I saw a team on the ice with players I have never heard of as Mats Sundin, Curtis Joseph, Alexander Mogilny, Tie Domi, Gary Roberts, Brian McCabe, Darcy Tucker, Mikael Renberg, Jonas Hoglund and Tomas Kaberle. Hockey fans were also amazing, passionate and I just became one of them right in my first game! There was a lot of energy in the air! It was an awesome feeling! The score was a shutout by 6 goals for the Leafs. I was so amazed that I started to look for more information about the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Internet e it was when I got to the NHL website and the mapleleafs.com. It was love at first sight and I became a Maple Leafs fan.
I returned to Brazil and unfortunately there were no NHL game broadcasts here on that time, so the only way to follow the team was through the Internet. I was always looking for the Leafs’ game scores and I just consumed all NHL content I could. After some years, I guess in 2005, there were some NHL games broadcasted by ESPN, but they were not live and usually only were transmitted at 02:00am. It was almost no TV coverage.
There was the lockout in 2004/05 and it was very said to have the season totally cancelled and no hockey at all, even through websites. After that, the Leafs started a period where the team did not even classified for the playoffs, but at least the team had Mats Sundin, my Leafs legend of all time, playing for the team, and his 500th goal, in overtime while short-handed, completing a hat-trick, was awesome! It just shows the kind of captain he was to the Leafs and the rock solid effort he had in every game he played! I will still have a Leafs jersey autographed by him! I know the list of Leafs Legends are endless, but as I’m a Leafs fan for the last 14 years, he was the only I was fortunate to watch playing! Obviously Johnny Bower, Wendel Clark, Darryl Sittler, Doug Gilmour and Curtis Joseph were stellar players and I’m proud for everything they did for the Leafs’ history.
I was fortunate to go to Toronto on vacation (October 2008) and watch a Senators @ Leafs game, the famous Battle of Ontario. From the begging it was just amazing to be at Air Canada Centre and feel how it is to be in a place where everybody knows the game you love and shares the same love for the team! Even before the game, I was coming from the Union Station and getting to the Air Canada Centre and I saw a place to buy the game program (a Leafs Magazine). It was being offered by CAD 5.00 and for my luck, when you bought one you would win an autograph from Darryl Sittler! Yes!! He was just there! Obviously I got it and also took a picture! That was unbelievable! For me, a fan from Brazil, to have the opportunity to get an autograph from a Leafs legend, it was a dream come true! It was the first time I felt I was part of the Leafs Nation!
In the beginning of 2009, I knew various blogs in Brazil focused on NHL hockey teams and there was even an online magazine for all information about hockey (www.theslot.com.br). They were all created by fans that got to know the NHL by very different ways, from NHL video games to vacations in North America. The guys were very well informed and followed their teams with passion. They were sharing their passion for the sport, news about the legends of the game and explaining the rules.
There was not a blog for the Maple Leafs, so I decided to start one, to provide all information I could about the Leafs. In February 2009 it was created the MapleLeafsBrasil.com, a blog to the Portuguese speaking fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs. And counting back, it is seven years covering every Leafs game, player negotiation, draft, history, change in the management, change in the coach and its staff. During these seven years of the blog I also used Twitter (@mapleleafsbr), that allowed me to get in contact with very special Leafs fans all around the World and understand that I was part of a Leafs Nation that truly has fans from Brazil, Croatia, Great Britain, Germany and so on!
Here in Brazil, I’m always trying to get my friends and colleagues to watch games on TV! My wife became a NHL fan, but cheering for the Blackhawks (I can say she is 99.9% perfect! Hehehehehehe). I’m always trying to explain NHL rules, the NHL teams and Leafs history to my friends, but at the end, I feel that I’m an apple in a basket of bananas! This is the soccer country and I’m a NHL fan, owner of a Leafs blog!
I thank God everyday I was fortunate to go to Toronto and New York and I have been able to buy tickets and watch the game and the team I love! I even have a canvas of James Reimer I got during one of my vacations in Toronto. He was just outside the Hockey Hall of Fame store, signing the canvas and I could not let this opportunity pass away! Reimer was very kind and to have a picture of a guy I just have seen on TV playing for the Leafs was a gift I was not even hoping for! I was able to visit the Legends Row and it was also amazing! Of course I took a picture besides Sundin’s statue!! Hehehehe
Nowadays, ESPN has the rights to broadcast live NHL games to Brazil and I also sign the NHL Centre Ice, so I can watch every Leafs game in the season! It would be awesome to have the opportunity to sign Leafs TV, as I would love to watch it’s contents, but it is not possible, not even through the Internet.
This is my history. A history of how a Brazilian guy became a Leafs fan! A history that is a little part of the 100 years history of this team! A history to be shared!
